Star Trek – Discovering the visual effects
In Season 5, Episode 8, titled “Labyrinths,” of Star Trek: Discovery, our team at Cause & FX had the thrilling opportunity to work on one of the show’s most visually stunning sequences: the Eternal Archives. This project required us to transform a magnificent physical location into an infinite architectural extension, featuring a never-ending library and maze.
Accepting The Challenge of The Eternal Archives
The task was to create a seamless, immersive environment that would extend the existing physical set into an infinite, believable space. This required a blend of 3D and 2D techniques to ensure the visual effect was both grand and realistic.
Turning Vision into reality
With a spirit of curiosity and innovation, our team used quick-turnaround conceptual layouts and camera previs to visualise the scale and enormity of the vertical void. This process involved grounding fantastical elements in reality, ensuring that the space felt vast and believable.
Collaboration and Execution
We closely collaborated with VFX Supervisor Brian Tatosky to design the maze and its intricate, fractal-like corridors. This collaboration was crucial in ensuring that our visual representation enhanced the narrative impact of the scene, reflecting Michael Burnham’s complex state of mind.
Results that speak volumes
Our efforts were met with high praise. Brian Tatosky noted, “Cause and FX was a great creative partner, quickly understanding and addressing our needs, but more importantly adding value with an eye for realism and drama in our shots.”
Dreaming big
Our experience with Star Trek: Discovery exemplifies our commitment to pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in VFX. As we continue to take on new and challenging projects, we remain dedicated to delivering extraordinary visual effects that captivate and inspire.
