TRANSPORTING YOU BACK TO
1919 IN THE OPULENT PERA PALACE.

Cause and FX partnered with long-time collaborator and VFX Supervisor Tobias Wolters, VFX Producer Max Serges and Karga Seven Pictures to contribute over 150 shots of Netflix’s acclaimed series Midnight at the Pera Palace.

The story tells the history of Istanbul and the beginnings of modern Turkey, through the eyes of the opulent Pera Palace Hotel. The hotel manager, Ahmet, and a young heroine Esra meet in the lobby bar. Under the influence of the heady atmosphere of the hotel, by chance Esra discovers a hidden secret in its rooms and accidentally travels through time to 1920’s Istanbul.

MIDNIGHT AT THE PERA PALACE
BREAKDOWN

RECREATING THE CAPITAL
OF THE HISTORIC OTTOMAN EMPIRE.

“I think the most important detail regarding the show was to recreate Istanbul, in a way that you really dive into the world how it was back then.” Max Serges, VFX Producer

To recreate the capital, we created a wide array of matte paintings, CG set pieces, CG street extensions and environments, 3D vehicles, sky replacements along with the execution of final 2D compositing. Existing historic buildings from this period were captured with observation scans, photogrammetry and lidar scans to aid rebuilding in 3D. With careful attention to historical references and persistent photoreal accuracy, the Cause and FX team augmented semi-built sets and real streets to transport the setting authentically back in time to 1920.

BUILDING THE BOSPHORUS PORT

“I think the contribution of the effects to the scene is essential. Setting the scene, getting the atmosphere across, building that world…That’s important here. It shouldn’t be obvious. We want it to be seamless. No one should watch the show and say “Oh great the effects.” Everyone should just watch this show and like the show and like the world they are in. So it’s not about showing off anything. It’s about blending in.” Tobias Wolters, VFX Supervisor

In this period drama, exquisitely executed set-extensions transport the story from the film set to another reality. VFX environments were an essential element in executing the ambitious plan to bring another era to life. A great deal of research and care was taken to ensure historical accuracy of architecture and design details.

Midnight at the Pera Palace was a perfect opportunity for close collaboration with the production team and photo-real world building, two VFX elements that sit firmly in the Cause and FX team wheelhouse.
