Artificial intelligence is no longer something the VFX industry is preparing for. It’s already embedded across modern production environments.

The real differentiator between global VFX studios isn’t whether Machine Learning (ML) and AI-enabled tools exists in their workflows. It’s whether it’s governed.

In a recent article, we shared how AI is being used at Cause and FX to strengthen workflows, support artists, and improve predictability across projects. On the flip side, we also need to look at the structure behind it.

Because in a global VFX production environment built on trust, governance matters as much as capability.

AI in Production Requires More Than Tools

Producers are increasingly requesting clarity around AI governance frameworks. The ability to articulate not just capability, but control, is fast becoming a differentiator among global VFX studios.

We’re seeing across the industry, VFX studios landing on opposite sides of the AI conversation.

Some studios may be accelerating AI adoption rapidly, integrating new tools directly into production pipelines without clearly defined guardrails. Others, choosing to pull back, unsure of the legal, copyright, and client uncertainty and scrutiny.

Both extremes carry risk.

Unstructured adoption can compromise client trust, security, and deliverable integrity. Total avoidance risks falling behind in efficiency and competitiveness.

At Cause and FX, we’ve found the advantage sits in the middle. Bringing in disciplined experimentation within defined operational boundaries is how we’ve chosen to occupy this space.

Our Philosophy: AI Should Support Expertise

We’re straight-up-kind-of-people, and our position on AI is straightforward too.

AI should support expertise, not replace it.

We use AI to automate repetitive tasks, accelerate research, assist coding, and support certain workflow stages. But final decisions, creative judgement, and accountability remain firmly human.

We’re making sure we evolve with the technology. At the same time, we know where responsibility lies – with us.

It’s this distinction that shapes every decision we make around AI integration.

Evaluated Tools, Controlled Environments

Like any new tool, we evaluate carefully. We look at security, client compatibility, practical productivity gains, licensing implications, ethical considerations, and long-term maintainability.

Where appropriate, we introduce new tools in controlled or sandboxed environments for internal workflows – giving us the chance to explore before anything touches live projects. This lets us experiment, without it ever being at the expense of client delivery.

For any use that involves client content or deliverables, we operate within that client’s specific AI policy and compliance framework. Our internal governance sets the floor. Client requirements set the ceiling. We meet both.

Larger integrations that require development resources are evaluated through leadership review and business case assessment, ensuring adoption strengthens the studio as a whole rather than creating fragmented tool usage across departments.

Working Within Client and TPN Requirements

Major studio clients don’t just have a general position on AI – they have specific frameworks. These typically define which tools are approved for use, which are prohibited, which use cases are permitted without further review, and which require formal notification and sign-off from their legal teams.

We treat those frameworks as non-negotiable, not as starting points for a conversation.

For our team, the distinction is clear. AI can support internal workflows – production planning, documentation, pipeline acceleration, and reference work that doesn’t appear in final deliverables. What it cannot do is generate content for final pixels without operating fully within the parameters each studio has defined, and obtaining any approvals those frameworks require.

We do not blur that line.

Data Security Is Non-Negotiable

Our approach is simple: if you wouldn’t post it publicly, don’t upload it to an AI service. This is how we’re responsible and disciplined with data handling.

Unreleased footage, scripts, proprietary techniques, confidential production details, and personal identifiable information remain protected, regardless of technological advancement.

AI does not lower our security standards. If anything, it raises them.

Human Oversight Is Mandatory

AI systems are powerful, but they are not infallible. Every AI-assisted output used within production is reviewed by a human. Code is tested. Technical outputs are validated. Documentation is checked.

Keeping Pace with the Times

Technology evolves quickly. Client expectations shift. Legal interpretations develop. Our approach needs to remain adaptive too.

The tools we use are reviewed regularly. Client requirements are monitored and integrated. Staff receive training to ensure responsible use. Significant AI-assisted workflows are documented where appropriate.

Studios that move too fast could risk reputational damage and client distrust. Studios that resist change risk stagnation.
